Owning a gym has taught me a lot about people. One thing I’ve noticed over the years…The people who stick with it, who genuinely thrive in their fitness journey, almost always have one thing in common: they’re not doing it alone.
I’ll be honest, even as a gym owner, I’ve had my fair share of slumps. When I go on holiday and I can’t train with my training partner, it hits me hard. Suddenly, workouts feel less fun and more like a chore. It’s not that I stopped loving lifting, it’s just that the energy wasn’t the same. Without someone there to challenge me, crack jokes between sets, or call me out when I wasn’t giving it 100%, the spark wasn’t as bright.
And here’s the thing: I see this all the time with our members. The ones who come in with a friend? They laugh more, lift more, and, let’s face it, they show up more often. There’s an undeniable power in partnership. Training with someone creates accountability. You’re not just letting yourself down if you skip a workout; you’re letting your mate down, too.
The kind of camaraderie your relationship with your training partner brings can’t be replaced by any motivational playlist or Instagram reel.
And then there’s the social aspect. Think about it: how many of us make real, meaningful connections as adults? Between work, family, and other responsibilities, it’s easy to feel isolated. Training with a friend isn’t just about fitness; it’s about connection. It’s about carving out time in your week to catch up, share stories, and maybe vent about life!
Here at FF, we’ve seen how much of a difference it makes when members bring a friend along. Not only do they stay consistent, but they also have more fun. And selfishly? It’s better for the gym, too. When you train with a friend, you’re not just adding energy to your workouts - you’re adding energy to our community. The vibe in the gym is infectious when it’s full of people hyping each other up.
So, here’s my challenge to you for 2025: if you’re a member and you’ve been going it alone, bring a friend next time. And if you’re someone who’s been thinking about joining but hasn’t taken the leap, grab a mate and come in together. It’s not just about the weights you lift; it’s about the people who lift you up.
As for me, I’m working on trying to motivate myself this cold, wet, miserable winter. But in the meantime, I’m leaning on our gym community - because that’s what this place is really about. Sure, we’ve got the equipment and the programs, but it’s the people who make it special.
So, bring your best friend, your work mate, your sibling, or even that neighbour who’s always talking about how they “should really start working out.” Trust me, it’ll make all the difference - for you, for them, and for us.
Happy New Year
Jack
