As a personal trainer I am in essence the leader of my tribe.
My clients get results & sustainable results because I try to create an environment where my clients desired behaviour is the normal behaviour.
Exercising regularly & intensely, using different styles of training/movement coupled with eating nutritiously dense foods isn’t a sacrifice for my clients (most of the time ). It’s normal and enjoyable (most of the time ). There is a key aspect to this; friendship.
If you aren’t getting the results you desire try:
Joining a group where your desired behaviour is the normal behaviour.
Join a group where you already have something in common with the group.
Don’t neglect or underestimate how important the social component is when striving for results.
Here are some basic examples:
A large national scale – people of these groups know what it means to be a Christian or a Muslim.
On a smaller scale – Take joining a CrossFit gym. There are a set of social norms that go along with being part of that culture. As you become part of that culture, as you develop friends and start to feel like you belong, you take on some of those norms. You may find yourself buying knee sleeves or only buying Reebok clothing or shoes.
Or take joining a bodybuilding gym as an alternative example. There are a set of different social norms that go along with being part of that culture. You may find yourself wearing certain bodybuilding branded clothes, taking steroids or wanting to take part in a bodybuilding competition etc.
When habits go against the grain of social norms, they are very unattractive.
When they go with the grain of what the group is doing, they are very attractive.
If you are presently a member of a group, but don’t feel you are getting the results you want, maybe it’s time for a change.
